Purina Europe’s fourth Purina in Society (PinS) Report shows strong results against Commitments
30 September 2024: Purina Europe (Purina) is delighted to publish its fourth Purina in Society (PinS) Report today, which demonstrates strong results against its first set of Commitments to help address the company’s environmental and social impact and the issues that matter most for pets, for the people who love them and for the planet.
That’s why Purina developed these ten Purina in Society Commitments in 2016, and was the first ever petcare company to launch commitments of this kind. The report showcases the progress Purina has made between 2021 and 2023 towards achieving the four outstanding PinS Commitments to: promote pet adoption, help reduce the risk of pet obesity, promote responsible pet ownership and implement responsible sourcing. It also covers an additional Commitment announced in 2021 relating to innovating to improve pets’ health and wellbeing.
Highlights include:
• Over 3 million children have participated in Purina’s responsible pet ownership programmes since 2016, greatly exceeding the 2 million target
• 16 European countries established pet adoption partnerships since 2016; those in place between 2021 and 2023 enabled 177,769 pets to find a loving home
• 15 new products focused on improving the health and wellbeing of pets were launched between 2021 and 2022, exceeding the goal of launching 10 new products
Jeff Hamilton, CEO of Purina Europe, said: “I am very pleased with the progress that we have made towards achieving our first-ever Purina in Society Commitments. Whilst it is fantastic that we have achieved and/or exceeded the majority of our Commitments, the impact that this work has had on positively impacting pets, people and our planet is what really matters. I would like to thank each and every colleague and partner who has worked so hard to deliver these successes we’re announcing today. From educating over 3 million children on responsible pet ownership to working with adoption partners who have found a loving home for over 177,000 pets, these are results we should all be proud of.”
Looking ahead, Purina’s teams across Europe are working to deliver on the six Purina Commitments that were launched in 2022. These were developed based on an analysis of the planetary boundaries, with the ambition to operate within the planet’s limits. Additionally, they were designed to address some of the key social impact areas outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and they reflect the issues that matter the most to the company’s stakeholders, which were learnt through a formal materiality assessment.
These forward-looking Purina Commitments include goals for 2030 around the topics that can make a difference to pets, people and the planet . With factors such as increased inflation adding pressure to many parts of society, including pet owners and lovers, a number of the PinS Commitments remain part of Purina’s Commitments moving forwards. This includes promoting pet adoption and responsible pet ownership programmes, as well as prioritising developing new products to support pets’ health. Additionally, Purina has made a commitment for the first time to foster people’s health through the power of the pet-human bond. Purina believes that, when pets and people bond, life becomes richer. That’s why it has committed to help 1,000,000 people in vulnerable situations improve their health and wellbeing by 2030 through the power of the pet-human bond. The company will share updates on its progress towards achieving the Purina Commitments.
